Marsh Lane / Bibbys Lane
Cat and Fiddle (Jutland) Hand pumpGreenalls, Hand pumpguests, Hand pumpTetley From the outside this appears to be a tiny bar in the bottom of an office block. The very nice fake antique interior is much larger than expected. The ale is of excellent quality.

Hyper Bar John Smith's, Tetley / Carling, Carlsberg, Stella This rather plastic up-market corridor bar is looking a little worn in places. The stylish chairs are rather uncomfortable. LSTV.

Hand pumpDirectors, Hand pumpTheakston XB Nice decor with a maritime theme (Ropes and lobster pots) in this pleasant one roomed "tardis", much bigger inside than the frontage suggests. Very busy on a Friday night. Food. LSTV. Small beer yard at the back. I'm told they have stopped doing real ale since my visit.

Linacre Boddingtons, Tetley / Carlsberg, Stella This impressive free standing building contains a plain bar, a pool room and a comfortable lounge in the traditional layout with the lounge served from a hatch across the corridor. Little Merton This free-standing pub was shut when I passed by on a Thursday evening, although the lights were on.
Not visited.
2 Irlam Road / Almadale Terrace
Madigan's Lighthouse Tetley / Carling, Carlsberg A large hall with nice fairly plain decor, very lively with a mixed clientele and a live band on a Friday night, and only slightly less busy on a Thursday. Late licence. I don't usually put music reviews in this guide, but the unpromisingly titled "Funky Monks" were excellent. A band who can follow a fine cover of James' Laid with Tom Jones' It's Not Unusual performed with equal aplomb are well worth seeking out!   Live musicDay5 Day6 Day7

Boddingtons / Heineken, Stella An enormous knocked through one bar pub decorated with American memorabilia and aimed at a young clientele. LSTV and umpteen small ones. I re-visited this place on a Thursday evening in 2004 and they wanted to charge me 3 quid to get in.
Last visited 1998.
Merton Road / Stanley Road
Mons (Mons) (Hill Top) Tetley / Carling, Carlsberg, Stella An enormous room with a very long bar, nicely decorated in traditional plastic pub style, and divided by a glazed partition into kids and no kids areas. When I visited the Hill Top on a Thursday evening the kids side was full of families dining. I'm told the food is good, and good value for money. LSTV. Wacky Warehouse.
More recently, refurbished and returned to its original name.

Muncaster Arms Hotel Trophy / 4X, Heineken This impressive building with a fine coat of arms above the door contains a knocked through one room pub decorated nicely in modern style. There's a small dance floor and stage in one corner.   BingoDay3   QuizDay1 Day4

Queens Worthington A plain friendly two-sided boozer. A bit dingy outside making me think it might be shut, but I was wrong.
Last visited 2003.
114 Knowsley Road / Gray Street
Renaghan's (Clarence) John Smith's / Foster's This two-sided pub is pleasantly decorated and kept spotless. The beer is cheap and live entertainment is often provided - On my first visit late on a Sunday afternoon a young girl was singing her heart out to an audience of about ten people. There is a snooker room at the back.

Oriel Road / St. Edmond's Road
Riley's (Qudos) John Smith's / Carling, Foster's This enormous, extremely smoky, rather tatty pool and snooker hall in the former Bootle Odeon Cinema was, perhaps fittingly, pub number 666 in my researches when I visited it in 1999. Revisiting in 2004 I found it a lot less smoky but no less tatty, and no-one was playing pool at all. LSTV. A sign outside says "genuine free house" but I can't see the point if they're only going to offer this bog-standard selection of beers.

Stanley Road / Malvern Road
Saint Winifred's Hotel John Smith's, Trophy, Welsh / Heineken The large bar side is plain, clean and tidy with nicely understated decor. The lounge side was shut when I visited. The John Smith's Smoothflow (the sign said) came out of a Whitbread Welsh font. Now CLOSED, I believe.

248 Rimrose Road / Knowsley Road
Salisbury This three-room pub was full of friendly locals when I visited on a Thursday evening, much busier than others in the area. The decor is nicely done and understated and the peculiar bar-stools look comfortable. The parrot in the bar side wouldn't talk to me! LSTV.

Marsh Lane / Salisbury Road
Seaburn Inn (Alexandra Hotel) (Dickie Lewis's) "Toolans Bar" John Smith's / 1664, Foster's, Miller This popular, well looked after 60s boozer has had new wallpaper since I visited the Alexandra. I'm pleased to report that they've also added a sign on the door of the gents, as I was confused on my previous visit.
Since my visit it's changed name again, and is no longer a Dickie Lewis's pub.

John Smith's / Foster's A two-bar house, with a nicely done out lounge side much larger than expected. The bar side was shut. Under Bootle New Strand Station
Star John Smith's, Tetley / Foster's, Miller This plain one-room boozer is well kept, but was very noisy and smoky when I visited. The interior is well faked and looks surprisingly old considering it's in a 1960s shopping centre.   KaraokeDay4   Live entertainmentDay6
