The Bar's The Star

Merseyside Pubs On Screen

This page lists some of the film and television appearances by Merseyside Pubs. As you can see, a lot of information is missing. If you can fill any of the gaps please email me at the address below.

Last Chance!!
I am at present rather disappointed with the development of this potentially interesting page of the web site. Unless there is a significant increase in the flow of contributions from readers, I will close this part of the Merseyside Pub Guide down.

Films and TV

51st State
Large parts of this 2001 film were shot in Liverpool and Birkenhead. The Yew Tree in West Derby plays the role of a Manchester pub called the Yew Tree. Robert Carlyle is a Liverpool fan who visits the Yew Tree to taunt the Manchester United supporters - He lets off a red flare in the bar before making his escape.
Boys From The Black Stuff
This five-part series by Alan Bleasdale was filmed in Liverpool in 1981/2 and features a few local pubs.
In Jobs For The Boys the Coach and Horses is clearly visible in the background in a number of scenes shot on a building site.
Yosser's Story has a scene in a club where Yosser meets Graeme Souness. I've received contradictory suggestions about this, but I think that it was filmed in the ballroom at the Vines.
Later the Old Fort is clearly visible in a shot outside the Royal Hospital.
George's Last Ride includes lots of references to the Baltic Fleet, but they never actually get there. Pegleg Pete's is also mentioned, which might be the Herculaneum Bridge?
The final scene, where Yosser meets "Shake hands", is apparently in the Green Man on Vauxhall Road - The exterior shots certainly seem to be, but the interior is nothing like it is today, so I can't be certain.
Brookside
Brookside was unusual amongst soaps in that the action was not centred on a pub. However, they did have a "local", The Swan, which appeared in a number of episodes. Up until 1984/5 this was played by the Sefton Arms in West Derby Village. Later the role was taken on by the Crown Inn in West Derby.
The Tavern Company on Allerton Road in Wavertree also appeared when a wine bar / restaurant setting was required.
The Brothers MacGregor
Dancin' through the dark
This 1990 film was set in Liverpool pubs and clubs.
GBH
Alan Bleasdale's 1991 tour de force was shot mainly in Liverpool, and must surely have included some pubs.
Grafton Club
I can't remember the title of the BBC "fly on the wall" show covering activities at the famous Grafton Club.
Hotel
Another "fly on the wall" show, this time in the Adelphi Hotel, made in 1997.
"Just cook will yer!"
Letter to Brezhnev
This 1985 film set in Liverpool features night club scenes filmed in The State on Dale Street.
Liverpool 1
Pub interior shots were done in the Vernon Arms on Dale Street.
Nice Guy Eddie
No Surrender
Another of Alan Bleasdale's works, from 1985. I haven't seen it but I'm told a lot of the action takes place in a social club.
Scully
Watching
I assume the pub interior which appeared in episodes of this late-80s comedy was actually a set.

Pop Videos

A number of local bands have recorded videos in or featuring Merseyside Pubs, including The Farm, The Mighty Wah! and The Coral. Once again, if you can fill in the details please email me. And, of course, The Beatles were filmed in the Cavern Club.
